Brucellosis Serology Testing Announcement

In compliance with federal regulations the VDC will handle samples submitted for Brucellosis testing as follows:

  • VDC is currently approved to run the buffered acidified plate antigen (BAPA), Card, Rivanol, and Standard Plate (SPT) Brucellosis serological tests.
  • Non Export Testing - The BAPA will be used as the primary test for all species. Samples with non-negative results, except swine samples, will be submitted to the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) for supplemental testing. Swine samples non-negative on the screening test will have additional testing done at VDC. If the supplemental test is still non-negative, they will be submitted to NVSL for additional testing.
    • Card Test - Cattle, bison and cervid samples non-negative on the card test are classified as reactors pending supplemental testing. If supplemental testing is negative, the animal can be reclassified as a suspect, but not reclassified as negative. Therefore, the card test should be only be used in these species when absolutely necessary.
  • Export - Samples for international export must be tested as specified by the receiving country. Non-negative samples are forwarded to NVSL for supplemental testing. International export requirements can be determined by calling the USDA Veterinary Services Office at 402-434-2300 and are also listed at the following website.

Testing requires at least 2.0 ml of serum. Samples must be submitted to the Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Center along with an Official Brucellosis Test Record (VS From 4-33). Samples will generally be tested on the day of receipt, but submitting veterinarians are encouraged to contact the laboratory regarding testing needs for large numbers of samples (>100) or special time constraints.

Card Test $2.20
Standard Plate Test - $4.00
