Veterinary Extension and Outreach

Faculty members at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences provide a vital link between veterinary medicine researchers and practicing veterinarians, livestock producers, and the public.

Our extension activities include helping protect poultry populations in Nebraska from catastrophic disease, hosting the Birthing Pavilion at the Nebraska State Fair, supporting 4-H activities focused on veterinary science, and conducting workshops and continuing education training for veterinarians.

Nebraska has a thriving poultry industry that has achieved tremendous growth the past few years. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln addresses the needs of the poultry industry through education, research, and outreach programs.

The Birthing Pavilion is one of the most popular attractions at the Nebraska State Fair. An estimated 30,000 fairgoers visit the pavilion annually. Many have the opportunity to witness animal births and all can see the newborn piglets, calves, ewes, and chicks.

The births and animal care are conducted and supervised by licensed veterinarians and trained professionals from the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association.

4-H and veterinary science

Display at the Nebraska State Fair of posters created by 4-H youth interested in veterinary science.

More and more Nebraska 4-H members are choosing veterinary science for their 4-H project. Each year faculty from the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences along with members of the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association judge posters and other entries submitted by 4-H clubs around the state.
